ArchivalResource

Samuel Sheldon family papers, 1799-1870.

Ledger and receipts, promissory notes, and other business papers, personal property inventories, insurance records, poetry, recipes for remedies, letters, and other papers of Samuel Sheldon and his wife, Sarah (Weeks) Sheldon. Papers dating from between 1810-1830 include information on the financing of roads and schools in Salisbury, Vt. In 1841 the Sheldon's home burned with the loss of much property and insurance records and pledges of assistance by neighbors document the event. Three of the earliest papers (1799-1804) are attributed to Samuel A. and Samuel B. Sheldon, presumably different people. It is not known how they came to be part of the collection. Sarah Sheldon's papers are almost entirely letters from relatives, including her sons. A folder of poetry includes poems of several family members along with clippings from newspapers or other publications containing poetry, recipes, and other materials.
